counseling process

1. What is a counseling process?

· It is the translation of counseling theories into action and is usually specified by a sequence of interactions on steps. Initially the process is concerned with relationship establishment, followed by some method of problem identifications and patterns of explanation, leading to planning for problem solution and remediation, and counseling with action and termination.

2. Enumerate and explain each of the counseling process and stages

A. Relationship establishment

· A helping relationship

· Counselor must take the initiative in the initial interview to establish a climate conductive to mutual respect, trust, free and open communication, and understanding in general of what the counseling process involves.

· Its purpose it to meet, insofar as possible the client needs.

B. Problem identification and exploration

· Clients must assume more responsibility because it is their problem.

· Counselor may question the client, but the question are stated in such a way as to facilitate the continued exploration of the client’s concern.

· A time for information gathering (past experiences, present function, hope, goods etc.)

· The goal of this stage is for both the counselor and the client to perceive the problem and its ramifications similarly.

· The client needs to develop a self understanding that recognizes the need for dealing with the need for change and action.

· Steps/Stages:

B.1. Define the problem

o It is important to identify the components or contributing factors and the severity of the problem to the client, its regency, and its longevity.

B.2. Explore the problem

o The kinds of information needed to fully understand the problem and its background are gathered.

B.3. integrate the information

o All information are systematically organized and integrated into a meaningful profile. It would be inappropriate to begin the explanation of changes that may be needed and barriers that may exist to these changes.

C. Planning for problem solving

· Effective goal setting.

C.1. define the problem.

o It is important that both the counselor and the client view the problem from a similar perspective and have the same understandings of its ramification.

C.2. identify and list all the possible solutions

o It is appropriate to brainstorm all possibilities.

C.3. explore the consequences of the suggested solutions

o Identify the procedures needed to implement each of the suggested solution.

o Projected outcomes for each solution must also be explored thoroughly.

C.4. prioritize the solution

o The client will prioritize the solution from best possibility down to least likely to produce the desired results.

D. Solution application and termination

· Clients have the responsibility for applying the determined solution, and the counselor for determining the point of termination.

3. What is the purpose of a counseling relationship?

· The purpose of counseling relationship is to meet, insofar as possible, the clients needs (not counselors needs). The counseling process within this relationship seeks to assist the client in assuming the responsibilities for his of her problem and its solution.

4. How can counseling help improve the quality of life of the following:

4.1. victims of abuse

· It is important to note the role of prevention programs.

· While prevention is the desired anecdote, we must still be prepared to assist the victims through crisis lines, crisis centers, and specialized rape assistance programs.

· The goal is to help them break the cycle of abuse.

4.2. people with AIDS

· Counselors can be helpful in assisting and educating the support systems of patients –families, friends, employers – and in helping the AIDS patient focus on life and living.

4.3. older adults

· Even the oldest client must be permitted to look ahead and plan for a different future if this is the client’s desire. If a lack of awareness and attitudes is not inhibiting, counselors can help older clients find new meanings and roles in life.

4.4. people with disabilities

· Counselors, as well as employers of the disabled, must have the goal to remove all barriers that have restricted people with disabilities from achieving their potential in employment and in the community.

5. Differentiate advising, guidance and counseling.

· Guidance is the main program and among its services is counseling whereas its goal is to help people manage their own problems using their own resources. Advising on the other hand is a form of offering solution or suggestion, whether solicited or not, it can sometimes be a barrier to communication because it prevents the counselee to use critical thinking in solving his or her own problem.

  • associated with a variety of functions, including motor control and learning.

Putamen

  • regulate movements and influence various types of learning.
  • These include controlling motor learning, motor performance and tasks, motor preparation, specifying amplitudes of movement, and movement sequences.
  • It employs dopamine to perform its functions.
  • Some neurologists hypothesize that the putamen also plays a role in the selection of movement (e.g. Tourette Syndrome) and the "automatic" performance of previously learned movements (e.g. Parkinson’s disease).

Reticular formation

  • A part of the brain that is involved in actions such as awaking/sleeping cycle, and filtering incoming stimuli to discriminate irrelevant background stimuli.[1]
  • It is essential for governing some of the basic functions of higher organisms, and is one of the phylogenetically oldest portions of the brain.

The reticular formation consists of more than 100 small neural networks, with varied functions including the following:

1. Somatic motor control - Some motor neurons send their axons to the reticular formation nuclei, giving rise to the reticulospinal tracts of the spinal cord. These tracts function in maintaining tone, balance, and posture--especially during body movements. The reticular formation also relays eye and ear signals to the cerebellum so that the cerebellum can integrate visual, auditory, and vestibular stimuli in motor coordination. Other motor nuclei include gaze centers, which enable the eyes to track and fixate objects, and central pattern generators, which produce rhythmic signals to the muscles of breathing and swallowing.

2. Cardiovascular control - The reticular formation includes the cardiac and vasomotor centers of the medulla oblongata.

3. Pain modulation - The reticular formation is one means by which pain signals from the lower body reach the cerebral cortex. It is also the origin of the descending analgesic pathways. The nerve fibers in these pathways act in the spinal cord to block the transmission of some pain signals to the brain.

4. Sleep and consciousness - The reticular formation has projections to the thalamus and cerebral cortex that allow it to exert some control over which sensory signals reach the cerebrum and come to our conscious attention. It plays a central role in states of consciousness like alertness and sleep. Injury to the reticular formation can result in irreversible coma.

5. Habituation - This is a process in which the brain learns to ignore repetitive, meaningless stimuli while remaining sensitive to others. A good example of this is when a person can sleep through loud traffic in a large city, but is awakened promptly due to the sound of an alarm or crying baby. Reticular formation nuclei that modulate activity of the cerebral cortex are called the reticular activating system or extrathalamic control modulatory system.

Cerebellum

· (Latin for little brain) is a region of the brain that plays an important role in motor control.

· also involved in some cognitive functions such as attention and language,

· and probably in some emotional functions such as regulating fear and pleasure responses, but it is its function in movement that is most clearly understood.

· does not initiate movement, but it contributes to coordination, precision, and accurate timing.

· receives input from sensory systems and from other parts of the brain and spinal cord, and integrates these inputs to fine tune motor activity.

· Because of this fine-tuning function, damage to the cerebellum does not cause paralysis, but instead produces disorders in fine movement, equilibrium, posture, and motor learning.

  • contains nuclei that relay signals from the cerebrum to the cerebellum, along with nuclei that deal primarily with sleep, respiration, swallowing, bladder control, hearing, equilibrium, taste, eye movement, facial expressions, facial sensation, and posture.
  • Within the pons is the pneumotaxic center, a nucleus in the pons that regulates the change from inspiration to expiration.

  • contains the cardiac, respiratory, vomiting and vasomotor centers and deals with autonomic functions, such as breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.
  • controls autonomic functions, and relays nerve signals between the brain and spinal cord.

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

  • Negative beliefs predict negative behavior (or problems in life).
  • Surprisingly, the psychological explanation of a self-fulfilling prophecy is not that positive beliefs predict positive events.
  • "A false definition of a situation evoking a new behavior which makes the original false conception come true."
  • What you believe will come true because you will subconsciously and consciously act in ways that cause the event to happen. Self-fulfilling prophecies are powerful, and real.

How Self-Fulfilling Prophecies Work in Psychology

If you think a negative thought (e.g., your husband will cheat on you), then you may predict or even create a problem (e.g., he is unfaithful). There are several possible reasons for this self-fulfilling prophecy. It's possible that you knew going into the marriage that he's been unfaithful in the past. Maybe he left his last relationship to be with you. Or perhaps it's not about him – maybe it's about your lack of trust or fear of intimacy.

Whatever the reason for your negative belief, your actions may set him up to cheat. More specifically, you may treat him with distrust and suspicion...and he'll be more likely to live up to your negative thoughts and expectations. If you refuse to believe him when he tells you the truth, he'll see no reason to stay honest. Your expectations shape your future.

Whether he cheats or not, it's not your fault. A self-fulfilling prophecy is simply a cause-and-effect scenario.

The Group Effect of Self-Fulfilling Prophecies

Snergistic Accumulative Effect

Two or more people's expectations are more powerful than one person's.

Group expectations predict events more accurately than individual expectations. Self-fulfilling prophecies in families are particularly common.

For instance, if your whole family expects Junior to break the law or develop a drinking problem by the time he hits age seven, then he could very well live up to those negative thoughts and expectations. This is the group effect of self-fulfilling prophecies.

The combined effect of self-fulfilling prophecies is especially significant when applied to society's beliefs about minorities or stereotyped groups. For instance, if we as a community believe that fast food is good, then our beliefs could affect our health as a society. If we believe we're raising a generation of video-game addicted spoiled children, then that's what we'll get.
